International campaign for organization of self-determination referendum in Western Sahara

Submitted on

London, March 31, 2016 (SPS) (UK) - The International Organization of Support to Western Sahara based in the UK, the "Western Sahara Action Forum" (WSAF) launched an international campaign to demand the organization of a self-determination referendum in Western Sahara, said Thursday a statement from the organization.

WSAF invites the international community to write, call and send messages by email to the UN Security Council "as soon as possible," to demand the organization of self-determination referendum in Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco since 1975.

"It is time that the international community takes action and shows it is united, by rejecting the intimidation tactics of Morocco and demanding the immediate organization of the referendum scheduled by international law," said the organization.

The WSAF notes that in recent weeks, Western Sahara "is at the centre of UN interest and the headlines of the international media," after the UN Secretary General visit to Sahrawi refugee camps and liberated territories, and its promise of increasing UN efforts to resolve the conflict after noting the "unacceptable" situation in which the Sahrawi people live.

It is recalled that Morocco "has insulted the Secretary General, orchestrated demonstrations against him and demanded the withdrawal of MINURSO personnel, despite the fact that it has no authority on the mandate of a UN mission on territory it does not control."SPS
