Sidney, 30/07/04
(SPS) the Australia Western Sahara Association (AWSA) urged UN's
Secretary General Wednesday to pay more efforts in order to "implement
its Peace Plan as soon as possible", calling the UN to "seriously"
assume "its responsibility" to the decolonisation of Western Sahara
conforming to the pertinent resolutions.
In a letter addressed to Kofi Annan, SPS received Wednesday, the
association called the UN to "take its responsibility towards the
Saharawi people seriously and implement its Peace Plan as soon as
possible".
"The endless delays of the referendum of self-determination for the
Saharawi people, and the more recent delays of the implementation of
the UN peace plan for Western Sahara due to the obstructions of
Morocco, are prolonging this suffering" of the Saharawi people, who
showed a great spirit of responsibility in cooperating positively with
the UN for the sake of a peaceful solution to the conflict.
The Saharawi people, underlined the letter, who showed a great
"patience", despite of the continuous deception it underwent because of
inability of the international organisation to impose the respect of
its own decisions and due to the passivity of the international
community in front of Moroccan intransigence, "deserve to be given a
chance to decide their own future according to the UN decolonisation
doctrine".
Regretting the resignation of the former UN Secretary General's
Personal Envoy, James Baker, AWSA recommended Kofi Annan "to appoint a
new Special Envoy with the same prestige and stature as Mr. Baker for
Western Sahara", so as to help press on Morocco to comply with
international legality. (SPS)
