Polisario calls UN to send an international ad-hoc commission to Western Sahara

Geneva, 30/05/2005 (SPS) Polisario Front’s bureau in Geneva called the UN to send "an international committee of investigation so as to establish the truth on the Moroccan repression in the occupied territories" of Western Sahara and to designate "a special official rappoteur on the Human rights situation to the Saharawi territories under Moroccan occupation".

Ina letter addressed to the permanent UN missions in Geneva, to international organisations as well as international and Swiss Medias, Polisario Front also claimed for the "opening of the Saharawi territory to international Medias and observers".

The letter recalled that Saharawi cities such as El Aaiun, the Capital, Dajla, Smara, Bojador and other cities are the theatre to peaceful demonstrations of protest, since May the 21st 2005, and are subjected to "a fierce repression without antecedent led by the Moroccan forces of occupation”.

"The barbarian repression against demonstrators shows to observers on the round that they attended to the negation of the fundamental human rights principles approved in the conventions and laws of all countries", underlined the letter of which SPS received a copy.

"The violation of the civic and political rights, committed by the Moroccan authorities in Western Sahara contributed to the atmosphere of frustration that dominated the territory for 30 years of occupation", the letter noted, estimating that "the criticality of the situation" requires a real engagement, knowing that "the protection of the civil population is urgent". The Spanish human rights League asks for the release of the detainees of the Intifada

Madrid, 30/05/2005 (SPS) The Spanish human rights League (SHRL) “strongly” condemned the violation by Morocco "of the most fundamental human rights, the right to demonstrate" in Western Sahara "at a moment when the international community recognise to the Saharawi people its rights on the basis of an arsenal of resolutions and many settlement plans, all of which Morocco accepted"

IN a press release publicised Monday, the organisation recalled Morocco that the Saharawi territory is "a subject to decolonisation and that the best proof is the presence of the Minurso", in the territory. It estimated that Morocco now "can no more pretend to be a democratic country that respects human rights".

SHRL asked for "the immediate release of the political prisoner EL Keinan and the 33 detainees of the Intifada", and to "immediately undertake measures against the persons who bares the responsibility of the repression". It also called human rights organisation to "move in this direction", the press release added. (SPS)
