OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/SOUTH MOROCCO/REPRESSION

Demonstrations in Smara denouncing the assassination attempt against Saharawi political prisoners

28.08.05

Smara (cultural capital of the Saharawi Republic), 28/08/2006 (SPS) Hundreds Saharawi demonstrators, in the occupied cultural capital of the Saharawi Republic, Smara, denounce, Sunday, the assassination attempt perpetrated by Moroccan criminals "hired" by the Moroccan penitentiary authorities against three Saharawi political prisoners, concordant sources indicated.

The demonstrators lifted the flags of the Saharawi Republic and chanted slogans in favour of the independence of the Western Sahara before they were "savagely" dispersed by the Moroccan forces of repression, the same sources indicated.

The Saharawi demonstrators also expressed their support and solidarity with the Saharawi political prisoners: Mohamed Salem Mohamed Yeslem Bahaha, Mohamed Mouloud Ghemid Elhaj and Abd Slam Kasem Dida, who are incarcerated in the notorious Carcel Negra (Black Jail) in El Aaiun, the same sources added.

In the occupied city of Bojadora flags of the Saharawi Republic were fixed in the streets and writings on the walls of the streets advocated the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and independence and the rejection of the Moroccan occupation.

On another hand, the cities of Zak and Tan Tan (South of Morocco) were the theatre of distribution of the Saharawi Republic flags and tracts asking for enabling the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence.

In the face of these gestures of solidarity with the Intifada of independence that started since lat May 2005 in the occupied territories of the Western Sahara and the South of Morocco, the Moroccan colonial forces sealed the different streets of these streets, which are inhabited in their majority by Saharawis.

Three other Saharawi political prisoners continue their hunger strike which they started last July the 29th in the local prison of Tiznit (Morocco), urging the Moroccan authorities to "review the show trials" they were victim to, as well as to ameliorate their conditions of detention.

The political prisoners are Mr. Mahmoud M'Barek Abou El Ghassem, Mohamed Bouanan and Abdeljalil Moujahid, and are condemned by the Moroccan justice to 10 years imprisonment each, because of their political opinions in favour of the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.
