German SDP estimate that Western Sahara's conflict solution would be a mean of relaunching the Maghreb Union

Berlin, 28/06/04 (SPS) German Social Democrat Party (SDP) considered that "the final solution to Western Sahara's conflict would be a mean of relaunching the Maghreb Union", hailing Polisario Front’s last release of 100 Moroccan POWs, according to a press release publicised by the party on Friday in Berlin.

SDP parliamentary group's spokesperson, Mr. Günter Glose, estimated that the resignation of James Baker, former Secretary General Personal Envoy to Western Sahara, "constitutes a big set back", to the efforts deployed in the settlement of the conflict, calling the two parties " Morocco and Polisario Front" to show their good "will" in searching a just and lasting solution to the problem.

"The final solution to Western Sahara's conflict would constitute a mean of economic, political and social relaunching of the Maghreb Union", underlined Mr. Glose.

On another hand, the spokesperson of German Councillor's Party parliamentary group, hailed the initiative recently undertaken by Polisario Front, in releasing 100 Moroccan prisoners of war, in response to a request by " Irish European Union's presidency" and Spanish Government.

This "initiative proceeded to by Polisario Front", underlined the communiqué, "is a positive signal", that should encourage the two parties, especially Morocco, to cooperate with concerned international bodies to "find solutions to unresolved humanitarian questions"; in particular those of Saharawi prisoners of war and Saharawi disappeared.

UN is called henceforward, to act more firmly on the enforcement of its resolutions on the problem, and to designate "a new personal envoy, who would be ready to devote himself willingly to the resolution of western Sahara's conflict, and whose authority would be recognised by the two parties" to the conflict, Morocco and Polisario Front, concluded the text.
