Madrid, 27/04/2004 (SPS)
The Spanish Popular Party (PP) and the Unified Left (IU - in Spanish) called
the Spanish Head of the executive, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, to
maintain the position of support to the self-determination of the Saharawi
people adopted by the former government.
The person in charge of international relationships of the PP, Jorge Moragas,
stressed in a statement to Europe Press, publicised in the 23rd of April,
on «the importance of the thorny conflict in Western Sahara in the
diplomatic relationships between Spain and Morocco », calling his new
Government not to «modify the national position on this matter».
«I hope that the socialist government, in its impulse to satisfy other
countries, would not unilaterally change the Spanish position concerning
Western Sahara, or discharge itself of an important element of our foreign
policy and our position which is relying on UN to reach an agreement between
the parties».
On another hand, the Federal spokesperson of the Spanish Unified Left (IU),
Felipe Alcaraz, expressed his « preoccupation » about the silence
of Mr. Zapatero concerning Western Sahara's question in front of his Moroccan
interlocutors during the brief visit he made to Morocco last Saturday.
Mr. Alcaraz indicated that his party will continue working so as Saharawis
«could recover their territory and their rights», asking Mr.
Zapatero for «more lucidity in the future», he put, as cited
by Europa Press. (SPS)
