SPS USA and France must contribute to the settlement of the conflict of the Western Sahara (Bastagli)
|
London, 26/11/2006 (SPS) The United States of America and France must make use of their influence to prompt the Security Council into robust action that would lead to a settlement to the conflict of the Western Sahara during the first months of the mandate of the new Secretary General of the UN, declared on Saturday the ex-Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for the Western Sahara, Mr. Francesco Bastagli to the "International Herald Tribune".
Mr. Bastagli, who was designate as the Head of the MINURSO from August 2005 until August 2006, estimated that it is imperative to subscribe the Saharawi cause in the priorities of the Security Council, calling the USA, which begins to give a particular interest to the Western Sahara, and France which is the main supporter of Morocco, to use their influence t prompt the UN Security Council undertake the needed measures for the settlement of the Western Sahara conflict.
Evoking the obstacles that hinder the self-determination of the Western Sahara, Mr. Batagli blamed some influent countries within the Security Council which support the colonial thesis of Morocco in the Western Sahara.
The United States gives a special interest to the Western Sahara since 2004, the date when James Baker presented his peace plan rejected by Morocco, he recalled.
Mr. Bastagli finally recalled all the international efforts that aimed to resolve the conflict on the basis of the self-determination of the Saharawi people and conforming to the recognition by the UN of the Western Sahara as a Non-Self-Governing territory.
The British newspaper recalled that Morocco has hindered the holding of the referendum it agreed upon with Polisario Front within the framework of the UN settlement plan of 1991.
He recalled that "the natural resources of the territory, which under the UN Charter should be used for the sole benefit of the Saharawi people, are being exploited by Morocco". (SPS)

SPS The Legislative Assembly of Emilie Romagne calls for the recognition of the Saharawi Republic
|
Roma, 26/11/2006 (SPS) The Legislative Assembly of the autonomous Italian region, Emilie Romagne, called on the Government of Mr. Romano Prodi to recognise the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic and undertake concrete diplomatic and political actions within the European Union in favour of the full exercise by the Saharawi people of their right to self-determination.
In a document, unanimously approved by the members of the Assembly (all political tendencies included), the Assembly exhorted the Italian Government to support the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination through the organisation of a referendum, as indicated in the Baker Plan and reaffirmed by the different UN’s resolutions.
It further called on the European Union to exercise pressures on Morocco so as to stop the intimidations and human rights violations against the Saharawi population in the occupied territories of the Western Sahara.
The text also called on the European community to assume its responsibilities vis-à-vis the Saharawi people, knowing that the European Union-Morocco accords of association are basically funded on the respect of the human rights and on the respect of the U’s resolutions.
The text urged the Italian Government to pay all necessary efforts to prompt Morocco stop denying the access to the territory to international delegations and Medias.
The legislative Assembly of Emilie Romagne stressed the urgency of undertaking "clear and irrevocable" measures to put an end to the sufferings of the Saharawi population and to avoid a dangerous destabilisation of the entire region.
The document also asks for an important humanitarian aid to the Saharawi refugees, and to an active participation to the preparation of the next Conference of the European Coordination of support to the Saharawi people (EUCOCO), which will take place in Italy in 2007. (SPS)
