Australian Labor Party calls its Federal Government to recognise SADR

25.11.04

Melbourne, 25/11/04 (SPS) The Victorian Branch of the Australian Labor Party adopted a motion supporting Saharawi people, during its conference that took place last Saturday in Melbourne, calling the Australian Federal Government to recognise the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), reported a close source to the Saharawi representation in Australia.

Unanimously adopted by the conference, this motion "calls on the Federal Government to recognise the Saharawi Republic (SADR) which is a fully-fledged member of the African Union (AU) and recognised by over 70 countries worldwide", noting "with great satisfaction that the republic of South Africa has extended full recognition and established diplomatic relations with Saharawi Republic on 15 September 2004", emphasised the motion.

In addition, the text exhorted "the Australian Federal Government to extend all due assistance to the UN in its efforts to organise a free and fair referendum for the people of Western Sahara", declaring "its full support to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence" and strongly deploring "the long delays, which have prevented the Saharawi people from exercising their inalienable rights through a UN conducted referendum", which failed so far to impose its resolutions relative to the conflict because of the " Moroccan obstructions and delaying tactics", indicated the motion.

On another hand the Party expressed "its deep concern for the human rights violations in the occupied areas of Western Sahara by Morocco ". Further, it called its Government "to provide humanitarian assistance to the Saharawi refugees who have been living in makeshift camps and in dire conditions", added the text.

Finally the motion called " the UN and the international community to press Morocco to accept and implement the latest UN peace plan for self-determination of the people of Western Sahara without further delay". (SPS)

The President of the Republic expected Today in Madrid

Madrid, 25/11/2004 (SPS) The President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, is expected today evening in Madrid for a visit during which he will meet with the President of the Spanish Government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

The meeting between Mr. Abdelaziz and Mr. Zapatero is expected for Friday afternoon, indicated the Saharawi representation in the Spanish Capital.

This meeting, the first between the two Heads of States, comes within the framework of "the willingness of the (Spanish) Government to resolve the problem" of Western Sahara, indicated the same source.

The settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara is considered by the Spanish executive as "vital for the interests of Spain and for the progress in the (process) of integration in the Maghreb", underlined the agency.

The Spanish Government is "actively implicated" in the search for a solution that is conform to the international legality, in which the UN plays a fundamental role, asserted the source EFE quoted.

"Substantially, the Government supports the UN Security Council's resolution 1541, approved last April, and which reiterated the support to the Baker Plan and stressed on the need of an accord between the two parties", emphasised the Spanish agency. (SPS)
