Kenya announces its recognition of SADR

05.06.05

Nairobi (Kenya), 25/06/2005 (SPS) The Republic of Kenya and the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) announced the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries at ambassadorial level, Saturday in a joint communiqué issued from Kenyan Capital "Nairobi".

The Republic of Kenya, which has a prestigious figure among the African family for its contribution in the liberation of the continent under the leadership of the late Jomo Kenyata, is a country that plays an important role in favour of peace and stability in Africa.

This recognition, that intervenes at a moment when the UN still is hesitating in the implementation of its resolutions for the decolonisation of Western Sahara because of the intransigence of Morocco, "is a strong message from Africa to the international community, especially to the Security Council, requiring positive results out of the peace process the United Nations initiated 14 years ago", officially underlined a diplomatic source to SPS.

It is also a fraternal solidarity and comfort from Africa to the Saharawi people, especially in this moment when it suffers a pitiless and sanguinary repression besides the bitterness of occupation", the same source added, indicating that the independence of Western Sahara "will enable the turning of the last page of colonisation in Africa". Italian CGIL calls the European Union to pressure Morocco to stop repression in Western Sahara

Roma, 25/06/2005 (SPS) The person in charge for External Relations in the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL- in French), Titti Di Salvo, called the Italian Government and European Union to intervene vis-à-vis Morocco so as to "put an end to the repression and favour negotiations that guarantee peace and independence in Western Sahara".

In a written statement SPS received, Mr. Di Salvo expressed particular "preoccupation" about "Moroccan police and army repression against peaceful demonstrations of protest organised by Saharawi population who only claim for their own right to self-determination".

"The high number of arrests and acts of discrimination worsen the already dramatic situation and makes its each time more difficult to reach a peaceful and negotiated solution to the conflict", Mr. Di Salvo said.

On another hand, the text deplored "the expulsion of foreign delegations and Parliamentarians from European countries, who wanted to visit the Saharawi territory to have an idea about the situation".

CGIL regrets the fact that the Moroccan Government "invests considerable resources to strengthen its occupation of the territory to the detriment of the development and improvement of the conditions of its people and to the detriment of the establishment of a strong political and economic union in the Maghreb".

Finally, the CGIL launched an appeal to all trade unions in the countries concerned by the development of close Euro-Mediterranean relations to "back a dialogue that should result in a just and peaceful solution to the conflict within the spirit of the defence of peace and development". (SPS)
