Brussels (European Parliament),
24/06/2005 (SPS) 104 European parliamentarians called on the UN’s
Secretary General (SG), Kofi Annan, “put pressure on Morocco so that it
immediately stops the repression of (Saharawi) civilians". They
expressed their preoccupation about the extent of the repression that
is striking, since the last 21st May, Saharawi population in occupied
territories of Western Sahara, in the south of Morocco and in Moroccan
universities where Saharawi students are suffering systematic
repression exercised against them by Moroccan authorities.
The letter addressed on Thursday to the SG by the President of the
European Parliament intergroup "Peace for Saharawi people", and signed
by 104 European parliamentarians, affirmed that "since 21 May 2005,
peaceful demonstrations have taken place in Western Sahara calling for
the implementation of UN resolutions as the sole solution" to the
conflict opposing Morocco to Saharawi people.
Regrettably, "Moroccan authorities have responded to these peaceful
demonstrations with brutal repression, thus violating the most
fundamental principles of the right to demonstrate and freedom of
expression", of individuals, the text, of which SPS received a copy,
regretted.
Results, more than "300 wounded, some of them suffering from very
serious injuries, struggling to stay alive and being denied any medical
assistance in hospital, 85 imprisoned, and more than 30 people
missing", the text added, crying out against the fact that the
territory is "completely sealed off to the media."
The signatories also called on Mr. Annan to make sure that the
territory is opened in the face of the "national and international
media", to constitute " an international inquiry commission to
investigate" Moroccan human rights’ abuses in the occupied territories
and to "send permanent international observers and human rights
organizations in the aim of protecting the Saharawi civil population
that is constantly being harassed by the Moroccan army, police and
rapid intervention forces."
Here is the original text of the letter, SPS received:
To: Mister Kofi Annan
Secretary General of the United
Nations,
New York
Brussels, 23rd June 2005
Mister Secretary General,
We are writing to you in relation to
the very serious situation that is currently developing in the
territory of Western Sahara under Moroccan occupation.
Since 21 May 2005, peaceful
demonstrations have taken place in Western Sahara calling for the
implementation of UN resolutions as the sole solution to a conflict
that has lasted for almost 30 years.
The Moroccan authorities have
responded to these peaceful demonstrations with brutal repression, thus
violating the most fundamental principles of the right to demonstrate
and freedom of expression.
Up until now, the number of victims is
of more than 300 wounded, some of them suffering from very serious
injuries, struggling to stay alive and being denied any medical
assistance in hospital, 85 imprisoned, and more than 30 people missing.
In addition, entire families are being harassed in their own homes.
What is more, the territory is completely sealed off to the media and
at least three delegations of parliamentarians and other personalities,
especially coming from Spain, have not been allowed to enter the land
to see for themselves the gravity of the current situation.
We firmly believe that this situation
must be dealt with urgently by deploying all the political tools
required. Let us not forget that this is a latent conflict, in which
the UN is struggling to maintain a very fragile ceasefire.
Therefore, we call on the UN:
1. To put pressure on Morocco so that it immediately stops the
repression of civilians.
2. To
make sure that the national and international media can enter the
territory and do their job without any kind of
impediments.
3. To
set up an international inquiry commission to investigate these events.
4. To
send permanent international observers and human rights organizations
in the aim of protecting the Saharawi civil
population that is constantly being harassed by the Moroccan army,
police and rapid intervention forces." (SPS)

Roma, 24/06/2005 (SPS) Italian
Democrat Socialist Party (DS) expressed its deep preoccupation about
the policy of repression prevailing these last weeks in Western Sahara.
DS denounced "acts of blind repression" and of "humiliations" civilians
in the occupied territories of Western Sahara are suffering from
because they demonstrated and claimed for their legitimate rights.
The person in charge for the External Relation of the Party, Luciano
Vecchi, quoted by APS, also condemned "the case of intimidation and
expulsion of foreign citizens, deputies and journalists, mainly from
Spain and Norway, who were intimidated and expulsed from the occupied
territory" by Moroccan authorities.
The Italian left party also underlined in its statement that "the Baker
Plan must be an acceptable solution to the two parties, mainly Morocco,
who is now activating men and money, not to struggle against poverty or
to developed and progress, but to maintain its forces on the lines of
the front".
Mr. Vecchi finally called the United Nations, European Union and the
international community to fully engage for the search of a solution
that conforms to the interests of the concerned population to live in
peace, harmony and stability.
Italian Communist Party (PDCI) called on Moroccan Government to
"respect human rights in Western Sahara", noting that "Moroccan violent
repression against peaceful demonstrations organized by Saharawi people
these last weeks are of an extreme seriousness".
Many Italian Deputies and Senators called on the President of the
Italian Council of Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, and his Minister of
foreign Affairs, Gianfranco Fini, to oeuvre for the intervention of the
UN in "the protection" of Saharawis "who are submitted to human tights"
in Western Sahara, exercised by the Moroccan colonialism.
On another hand, the Party of the Italian Communist Re-foundation (PRC)
insisted Thursday on the necessity of the implication of diplomacy to
help Saharawis and condemn Moroccan repression. (SPS)
