Demonstration in El Aaiun to denounce human rights violations in
Western Sahara
25.05.05
El Aaiun (occupied territory),
24/05/2005 (SPS) Hundreds of Saharawi citizens demonstrated on Monday
in a popular neighbourhood in the occupied Saharawi Capital, El Aaiun,
to protest against human rights violations in Western Sahara
perpetrated by Moroccan colonial authorities, reported a press release
publicised by the organisers SPS received.
The demonstration was violently oppressed by the Urban Group of
Security (GUS), a group of quick intervention recently created by the
colonial authorities. It should be no that this group of intervention
often organise marches and demonstrations in the city to intimidate the
population.
Many human rights activists were injured during these events, among
whom the press release names Ahmed Sabai, Lemsamih Baba, Lebeihi
Fadili, as well as two others seriously injured, Hamdi Taoubali and
Moustapha Dah, still in hospital.
Moroccan colonial authorities also attacked Saharawi human right
activist, Mrs El Ghalia Jimi, before taking her camera from her.
The organisers of the demonstrations claims, among other claims, the
return of a Saharawi detainee, Hadi Ahmed Mahmoud, alias El Kainane,
abusively transferred from la Carcel negra (Black Prison) in the
beginning of the week to the prison of Ait Melloul. (SPS)
