Support of the region of Emilia Romagna to Saharawis

Rome, 19/11/2004 (SPS) The Council of the region of Emilia Romagna confirmed Thursday its full support to the Baker Plan for the organisation of a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara and expressed its will to increase the aid to the Saharawi people, reported Algerian Press Service, APS.

The resolution presented by the Counsellors Ugo Massa (Left Democrat) and Luisa Babini (Italian Republican Party) was unanimously approved by the regional Council who expressed its commitment to support the UN plan that plans for the self-determination of the Saharawi people.  

After having recalled the different resolutions Security Council adopted on Western Sahara, including the resolution 1570adopted last October the 28 that reaffirmed its support to the Baker Plan again, and after noting the dramatic conditions of life of the Saharawi people, the regional Council of Emilia Romagna expressed its full commitment to support the Baker Plan for the solution of the conflict and for the free exercise by the Saharawi people of their right to self-determination in all international bodies, and in particular within the European Union's and the UN's.

On another hand, the regional Council decided to intensify the programmes of the humanitarian aid to the Saharawi people by increasing its financial aid within the UN humanitarian organisation (UNHCR and WFP), and by supporting the projects of cooperation initiated by the local administrations, associations of solidarity and NGOs of Emilia Romagna.         

The regional Council also expressed its commitment to call the Moroccan Kingdom to allow international and independent institutional inspections to investigate on the situation of Human right s in occupied territories under Moroccan occupation, especially the conditions of detention of Saharawi activists and citizens.
