There is no solution out of the self-determination referendum, affirms Saharawi Ambassador to Pretoria (Moroccan Medias)

18.04.05

Rabat, 18/04/2006 (SPS) "There will be no possible solution to the conflict out of the self-determination referendum", affirmed the Saharawi Ambassador to Pretoria, Ubbi Bachir, quoted by Moroccan weekly magazine, "Essahifa", in its last edition. He asserted that the Saharawi people reject the preposition of autonomy Morocco is promoting to break the international isolation Rabat is suffering.

"The preposition of autonomy actually evoked in Morocco is not a new preposition owing that it was proposed many time without results", the Saharawi Ambassador warned, underlining that Spain, while still the colonial power of the Western Sahara, has tried to enforce this preposition in 1974, in vain. "We refused this preposition then", he added.

Asked about the impossibility, according to Rabat, to organise the referendum, Mr. Bachir said that this claim is "a false estimation" knowing that "the last resolution of the UN’s Security Council stipulates that the conflict must be resolved on the basis of the respect of the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination".

"The UN’s General Assembly on its side unanimously considered the Western Sahara question as "a decolonisation question that should be resolved through the self-determination of the Saharawi people".

"But since the Moroccan Government does not cease claiming that the Saharawis in the occupied zones of the Western Sahara are Moroccans, and proud of being so, and that the other part of the Saharawis in the Saharawi refugee camps are sequestrated by the Polisario and Algeria, why not giving them the opportunity to freely express this 'Moroccanity' and avoid the war thus", he wondered. Mohamed El Moutaouakil: Polisario Front is the "only legitimate representative of the Saharawi people"

Rabat, 18/04/2006 (SPS) The recently released Saharawi political prisoner, Mohamed El Moutaouakil, declared that the Polisario Front is the "only legitimate representative of the Saharawi people", recognised by the international community. He reaffirmed that the optimum solution to the Western Sahara conflict, which is accepted so far by the UN, passes though the Baker Plan II, which plans for a transitional period that should end with a referendum.

"The question of the Western Sahara can not be excluded from the solutions that became ordinary within the UN, such as in the case of East Timor and in other zones of the world", he said.

Mr. El Moutaouakil further estimated, in an interview he gave to the Moroccan weekly magazine, Assahifa, that the Baker Plan II is "the logical and fair solution for the two parties to the conflict".

Concerning his actual position as a human rights activist, Mr. El Moutaouakil said that the political position of his movement was clear and has been expressed many times, mainly a position "advocating the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination ".

He also recalled that since last May the 21st 2005, the Saharawi citizens in the occupied territories of the Western Sahara are victims to the fierce oppression by the Moroccan forces of occupation and "especially the Saharawi human rights activists".

These repressive practices perpetrated by the Moroccan security services, "who are permanently committing serious human rights violations, not only by the banning of demonstrations or free expression, but also through the aggression and ransacking of the houses, he concluded. (SPS)
