17.06.05

El Aaiun (occupied territories), 17/06/2005 (SPS) Saharawi Association of the Victims of the serious human rights violations committed by the Moroccan (ASVDH) launched, Thursday, an appeal for assistance to a seriously injured young detainee of the Intifada, who will appear before Moroccan penal court this June the 22nd despite of his serious state of health, indicated a press release publicised by the association.

The young El Hairach Hassanna, 18 years, was arrested during "demonstrations of the Saharawi people for their self-determination, in the 25/05/2005, at mid-night in his family house without any note from the procurer", indicated the text.

The young man was then "taken to the judicial police station, where he was submitted to all forms of physical and psychological torture. Results, fractures in the nose, left shoulder, injured in his front and traumatism at the level of his vertebral column". He was transported to the hospital Hassan II of El Aaiun in a critical state, what pushed the doctor to give him "a medical certificate testifying on his physical inaptitude for 40 days", the same source added.

Despite his critical state, the victim was forced to appear before of the penal court for "constitution of a criminal group, putting obstacles in public ways, destructions of public goods, violence against employees of the State during the exercise of their functions, armed gathering and burning of the Moroccan national flag".

"Scandalous accusations", says a Saharawi human rights expressing his indignation, adding that "the employees mentioned in the accusation are the same employees of the Moroccan repression who destroyed Saharawis’ houses, beaten women kids and old persons, destroyed goods, raped children, arrested and terrorised pregnant women".

"Saharawi human rights activists launch an urgent appeal to the international opinion, organisations and democratic countries, to intervene so as to protect this helpless people. Rabat is reproducing, with fidelity, the image of the regime of Apartheid in the South Africa of the 60ies and 70ies", he said. (SPS)

OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/REPRESSION
Three Saharawi human rights activists brutally beaten black and blue by Moroccan authorities during a demonstration in El Aaiun

El Aaiun (occupied territories), 17/06/2005 (SPS) Moroccan authorities violently repressed a demonstrations organised by Saharawi activists and citizens to protest against the repression, earlier in the morning, of a first peaceful demonstration held by Saharawis in commemoration of the historical Intifada of Zemla in 1970, indicated the correspondent of SPS on the ground.

"The demonstration held around 17.00 GMT, in Smara Avenue, was immediately surrounded by Moroccan forces, who did not allow more demonstrators to join. The forces of repression then attacked the protestors, led by officer, Abou El Hassan, Chief of the GUS and one of the most brutal Moroccan torturers and responsibles for human rights violations in occupied territories of Western Sahara", the same source indicated.

"The Group of Urban Security (GUS) expressly attacked Mrs. Aminatu Haidar, ex-political prisoner and courageous human rights defender, with two of her colleagues Mr. Lidri El Houssein, an active human right defender and Mrs. Fatma Aayach, ex-political prisoner", he underlined.

The list of the victims risks to be heavier, "we registered in particular the cases of Mrs. Aminatu and Mr. Lidri because they were mainly targeted by the agents of GUS under the orders of officer Abou El Hassan, what confirms that we are the witnesses of a new escalade of repression and a new strategy adopted by Moroccan authorities targeting Saharawi activists in their physical safety", he concluded.

Another demonstration, which was organised in the Maghreb Arab Street (baptised Ali Salem Tamek’s street by the population) in commemoration of the historical Intifada of Zemla in 1970, and to claim for the independence of Western Sahara, in El Aaiun, was violently repressed by Moroccan authorities causing many injured persons among whom a mentally handicapped young Saharawi, Haddad Saaid.
