17.02.06

Algiers, 17/02/2005 (SPS) Iran, which "recognises the independent Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic", sees the solution to the Western Sahara’s conflict only within the UN’s framework, declared the Ambassador of Iran to Algiers, Houssein Waleh, in an interview to the Algerian newspaper, Al Massa, publicised in its Wednesday edition.

"Since the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979, Iran showed its willingness to support all just causes world wide, including the Saharawi cause. Moreover, Iran recognises the independent Saharawi Arab Republic and estimates that the solution to the Western Sahara’s conflict must be within the framework of the United Nations and on the basis of the pertinent resolutions", he declared answering Al Massa’s journalist’s question on the subject.

He further stated that his country "hopes to see the Saharawis enjoying their internationally recognised rights", mainly the right to self-determination and independence, estimating that realising this is a duty of the international community, which should impose the enforcement of its resolutions regarding the conflict.

"We believe that there is no alternative for the settlement of this question other than the enforcement of the pertinent UN’s resolutions", the Iranian diplomat stressed, expressing the desire of his country to see "the success of the efforts of the international community in this direction".
