Spanish parliamentary intergroups adopt a resolution in favour o the decolonisation of Western Sahara

16.03.05

Palma de Mallorca, 15/03/2005 (SPS) Spanish parliamentary intergroups "Peace and freedom in Western Sahara", unanimously adopted a resolution in favour of the decolonisation of Western Sahara, during their 9th conference that took place between the 11 ad the 12 March.

The intergroups called "the President of the Government, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, to assume the historical responsibility of Spain towards Saharawi people", exhorting their country to defend Saharawi people's right to self-determination and to abide by the "the international legality it abandoned from 1975".

The text also solicited "the immediate stopping of human rights violations in occupied territories of Western Sahara", claiming for the "opening" of the territory to international observers, :medias and NGOs and calling for the "the stopping of the plundering of the natural and cultural resources" of Saharawi people.

They denounced the "maintenance" of the wall of shame, which constitutes "a violation" against Saharawi population in occupied territories and in the refugees’ camps.

On another hand, they hoped for "the increase of the humanitarian aid" from Europe to some 200.000 Saharawi refugees, knowing that "the food supplies of Saharawi population in the camps suffer a dangerous deficit", had recently warned Saharawi Red Crescent.

Copied of this resolution "were sent to the UN's Secretary General, Security Council, the European Parliament's Intergroup (Peace for the Saharawi People), the intergroups of the Congress and Senate as well as Spanish autonomous Governments' Parliaments", indicated the text.

Other copies, it was indicated, were addressed to embassies and consulates of the member States to the UN's Security Council, to the Kingdom and Embassy of Morocco, to the King and the President of the Spanish Government, to the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, to the Delegation of Polisario Front in Spain and to the Federation of the Institutions supporting the Sahara (FEDISSAH).

Mr. Sidati exhorts the EU to "publicly condemn" the Moroccan repressive practices against the Saharawi people

Brussels, 16/03/2005 (SPS) The Minister Counsellor to the presidency delegated to Europe, Mohamed Sidati, exhorted the European Union, Tuesday publicly condemn" Moroccan repressive practices in occupied territories of Western Sahara and South Morocco.

In a letter he addressed to the presidency of the EU, of which SPS received a copy, Mr. Mohamed Sidati underlined that the European institution "must publicly condemns the repressive and degrading practices" perpetrated by the Moroccan State against the Saharawi population in many places of the occupied territory and south Morocco as well as in Moroccan universities. He exhorted it to "send for an investigation on the facts if needed".

The Saharawi diplomat estimated that with these new violations of Saharawi people, "the Moroccan State gives a serious blow to the principles it engaged on respecting during the signing of its accords of association with the European Union" and "seems to be respecting only their economical", and military aspects.

On another hand, the international silence in front of these Moroccan exactions, such as the repression of Saharawi students in Rabat, seems to be encouraging Morocco to "reinforce its repressive and authoritarian policy, especially towards Saharawi people and their legitimate claims to freedom and self-determination", he said.

The European Union has got the duty of "imposing the law of humanitarian intervention" in Western Sahara in order "to protect these population in danger", he considered adding that Morocco "can not continue violating its rights with impunity counting on the indifference" of the international community.

Saharawi women organised, last Saturday March the 5th, a sit-in in front of "Negjir" hotel in El Aaiun to protest against the visit planed for by the "coalition watanuna" (an organisation of the Makhzen) to the Saharawi capital.  A visit that comes within the framework of a campaign of defamation led by the Moroccan Government against Saharawi refugees, it should be recalled.

The Moroccan police was not late to repress, last Tuesday 8 March in Rabat, a demonstration organised by Saharawi students, because they were claiming for Saharawi people's right to self-determination and independence as well as for human rights respect in Western Sahara. The intervention of the police caused more than 20 students injured among whom 4 girls were named.

Two days later in Tan Tan, " Six injuries 4 arrests", were mentioned as a result to the confrontations last Thursday between Moroccan police and Saharawi unemployed graduates in Tan Tan, reported a press release of the association of graduates SPS received

Many demonstrations and sit-ins of solidarity with the students of Rabat were organised in the different Moroccan universities where Saharawi students have to study because there is no universities built in their country Morocco occupies. (SPS)
