Urgent humanitarian aid from the Spanish Red Cross to the Saharawi refugees

Madrid, 16/02/2006 (SPS) The Spanish Red Cross chartered 3 airplanes that will transport an urgent humanitarian aid of some 34 tons to the Saharawi refugees, who suffered torrential rains and serious floods that destroyed 50 % of the structure of the camps leaving some 50.000 persons without shelters.

       

A first airplane, carrying 10 tons aid, was planed to fly Wednesday afternoon from the air base of Torrejon de Ardoz (Madrid). Another one will fly on Thursday from Barcelona and the third; will fly on Saturday fro the Canary Islands, the Spanish Red Cross said.

       

An airplane, chartered by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation (AECI), the 3rd since last Tuesday, was expected to fly on Wednesday afternoon towards the camp. AECI is planning to organise a 4th flight this few coming days, it was indicated.

       

The Secretary of the International Relations of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), Trinidad Jimenez, called on Tuesday to "join efforts at an international level".

 

The President of the Republic, Mohamed Abdelaziz, received the Representative of the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation (AECI) for the aid of the Saharawi Refugees, Ana Maria Gonzalez Ortiz, Tuesday morning at the seta of the Presidency.

 

The Spanish official also informed the President of the Republic that her Government will send 3 airplanes carrying some 48 tons of humanitarian aid, the same source said, underlining that 2 of them already landed in the airport of the Algerian city of Tindouf, on Tuesday afternoon. (SPS)

Italian emergency humanitarian aid to the Saharawi refugees     

 

 

 

 

Algiers, 16/02/2006 (SPS) The Italian Government decided to "offer an urgent aid" in favour of the Saharawi refugees, whose camps were devastated last week by strong floods after torrential rains that stroke the region, reported Algerian Press Agency, APS, quoting Italian Embassy to Algiers.

 

"It is a n aid composed of tents, blankets, jerry cans and drugs, whose amount is estimated to some 85.000 euros, which will be distributed to the disaster-stricken populations through the intermediation of the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA)", the Embassy further stressed, the same source quoted.

 

In this respect, "a cargo plane is planed for in Saturday in the Tindouf Airport", it was added.

 

 Other aid, within the framework of the phase of emergencies as well as of reconstruction, will be provided for by many regions and Italian local administrations", the same press release indicated, APS said. (SPS)

Saharawi refugee camps after torrential rains and floods of last week (Chahid El Hafed)

 

 

 
 

 Chahid El Hafed (Saharawi refugee camps), 16/02/2006 (SPS) Chahid El Hafed, the camps where most Ministries and central seats of Saharawi institutions and NGOs are based, was affected by torrential rains and floods that stroke the different camps where Saharawi refugees are settling n the Algerian region of Tindouf, since last Thursday to Saturday.

 

The camera of SPS depicted some images, this morning, after five days of the floods. Big lakes, never seen in the region before, attracted the attention of the photographer.

 

UNHCR affirmed, on Monday, that "torrential rains", in the Saharawi refugees camps in the Algerian region of Tindouf, have destroyed 50% of the structure of these camps, leaving 12.000 families and 50.000 persons without shelters, it should be recalled. (SPS)

UNHCR announced an urgent aid to the disaster-stricken Saharawi refugees     

 

 

 

 

 

Chahid El Hafed, 16/06/2006 (SPS) The UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced, on Wednesday, the dispatch of aid to the Saharawi refugee camps, where more than 50 000 Saharawi refugees are without shelters, after serious floods provoked by torrential rains last week, declared the international organisations in a press release:

 

The Organisation stressed that "an air bridge is currently prepared for to send light tents, blankets, mattresses and plastic rolls from the regional depot in Jordan", the text stressed.

 

It also sent a team of emergencies, including an expert of planning of sites and specialised in the distribution of water, it was indicated.

 

UNHCR works in collaboration with the World Food Programme (PAM), which plans for the distribution of food for the affected families.

 

Since last week, torrential rains "destroyed some 50 per cent of adobe made houses in the refugee camps of El Aaiun, Aousserd and Smara", and many other shelters were seriously damaged and are about to collapse, the UNHCR recently asserted. (SPS)
