Algiers,
15/07/2004 (SPS) The President of the Spanish Government,
José-Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, declared Wednesday in Algiers that
leading the process to the settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara
is UN's duty, estimating that "the roadmap should be the international
legality and the UN".
"After many years of failure (…) all the parties should discuss, United
Nations should explore all ways", underlined the Head of the Spanish
Government, after a meeting with Algerian President, Abdelaziz
Bouteflika.
''To be reliable and efficient, any solution should be accepted by all
parties", he warned, adding that ''Spanish Government like all other
governments is disposed to contribute to this solution, which must
respect the dominant, main and decisive paper of the UN".
Intervening after Mr. Zapatero, Algerian Foreign Affairs Minster,
Abdelaziz Belkhadem, reaffirmed Algeria and Spanish attachment "to a
fair and final solution within the framework of international legality
and UN's resolutions, which guarantee peoples' right to
self-determination".
"We want this process maintained within the framework of the UN and we
reject any attempt to transfer it anywhere else, neither to a
Mediterranean framework, nor within Maghreb Union's, nor within Arab
Union's one", added Algerian Head of diplomacy.
The President of Spanish Government arrived Wednesday morning to
Algiers, in a short visit, accompanied with Spanish Foreign Affairs
Minister, Miguel Moratinos, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism,
Jose Montilla. (SPS)

"Distorting the referendum of self-determination for Saharawi people is
really deceiving", declared Ghali
Madrid, 14/07/04 (SPS) "The attempts to distort the referendum of self-determination in order to deprive Saharawi people from choosing their future freely is really deceiving", affirmed Polisario Front's delegate to Spain, Brahim Ghali, has reported Spanish press agency Europa press in its Monday's edition.
In response to the last statements of Spanish Head of diplomacy, Miguel Angel Moratinos, to El Mundo, Polisario Front's delegate to Spain claimed that Morocco wants to put obstacles in front of all ways that can lead to the organisation of the referendum, although it remains the only way that can allow Saharawi people's inalienable right to self-determination, which is the only democratic, fair and legal final settlement to the conflict.
"Morocco delays peace, legal solution according to UN's resolutions, and these delays will unavoidably lead to the destabilisation of the region", ha e added.
The Saharawi delegate, recalled that all UN's resolutions "reaffirm Security Council an international community's support to Saharawi people's right to self-determination", because "giving a right to whom it does not belong, is incorrect, and taking it from its owner is unfair", he underlined.
