A Malaysian military medical unit affected to the Minurso

Rabat, 14/05/2006 (SPS) A Malaysian military medical unite replaced the Korean medical group within the UN’s mission for the organisation of a referendum in the Western Sahara (Minurso).

 

The official ceremony of replacement of commandment was undertaken at the headquarters of the Minurso, and chaired by the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to the Western Sahara, M. Francesco Bastagli and the Commander of the Minurso, General Kurt Mosgaard, according to a press release issued by the Minurso, reported Algerian Press Agency, APS.

 

Affected since 1994 within the Minurso, the Korean military group was replaced by a Malaysian military medical unit, the same source added.

 

''Since February 1994 the Republic of Korea offered a group of military medical group to support the UN’s mission for a referendum in the Western Sahara'', the same source underlined, adding that starting from March 2004 this military unit also granted some medical assistance to Saharawis, within ''confidence-building-measures'' organised by the UNHCR.

 

The Korean military unit was composed by about 542 doctors, nurses and military personnel within the Minurso. (SPS)

Five Saharawi citizens arrested in demonstrations in the occupied city of Smara

 

 

 

 

 

Smara (occupied territories), 14/05/2006 (SPS) The Moroccan forces of repression arrested 5 Saharawi youths, on Friday, during demonstrations  that took place Thursday night to Friday early morning in Smara, in commemoration of the 33rd anniversary of the creation of the Polisario Front, concordant sources reported.

 

Demonstrators raised the flags of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic and chanted slogans rejecting the Moroccan occupation of the Western Sahara and asking for the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.

 

The Moroccan forces of occupation "violently" arrested the following young Saharawis: Yahya AL Jabari, Abdallah Al Moutti, Khatri Al Moussaoui, Majidi and Labeidi Karoum Salama, the same sources added.

 

On another hand, the Saharawi citizens in the city of M'Hamid El Ghezlan (South of Morocco) organised a sit-in on Friday in front of the headquarters of the Moroccan administration, asking for the "respect of human rights" in the occupied territories of the Western Sahara and in the south of Morocco.

 

The Moroccan colonial forces "brutally" dispersed the Saharawi demonstrators, who raised the Saharawi Republic’s flags on many houses in this southern Moroccan city in the eve of a planed visit of the Governor of the region, the same sources said. (SPS)
