Spain in favour of a fair and definitive solution to the conflict of Western Sahara

12.04.05

Madrid, 12/04/2005 (SPS) Spanish Foreign Affairs minister, Mr. Miguel Angel Moratinos, reiterated to his Saharawi counterpart, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, on Monday, the engagement of his country "in favour of a fair and definitive solution, within the framework of the United Nations," to Western Sahara conflict, reported an official source in the Spanish Foreign Affairs Ministry as quoted by Press Agency, Afrol News.

During an official reception he offered to his Saharawi counterpart in the Palace of Santa Cruz, the Head of the Spanish diplomacy reaffirmed, "the engagement of the Spanish Government to actively work in favour of a fair and definitive solution, within the framework of he United Nations, and conforming to the international legality."

The meeting that took place with the presence of the Representative of The Saharawi Front for the Liberation of Sagia El Hamra and Rio De Oro (F.POLISARIO), M. Brahim Ghali, was an occasion for the two parties to exchange "the points of view on the settlement of the Morocco-Saharawi conflict, taking into account Spanish moral and historical responsibility" towards the Saharawi people, having been the former colonial power, Brahim Ghali said.

He also declared to Spanish press that "Moroccan Government persists in its rejection of the UN's resolutions". Worst, he deplored, Rabat "continues erecting obstacles in front of the enforcement of the peace plan for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara", despite more than 50 resolutions by the UN Security Council and some 30 resolution of the General Assembly, which calls for the organisation of a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara.

On another hand, he underlined that Morocco "assumes the responsibility of the situation that may result of its detachment from its engagements" with the international law and community to resolve the last decolonisation dossier in Africa". (SPS)

Norwegian Left Party national congress supports Saharawi People’s right to self-determination.

Kristiansand (Norway), 12/04/2005 (SPS) Norwegian Socialist Left Party (Sosialistisk Venstreparti, in Norwegian- SV), supported Saharawi people's right to self-determination, in a statement by the Party's national congress held from 31st to 3rd April 2005 in the city of Kristiansand (Norway), reported on Monday to SPS M. Ronny Hansen, member of Norwegian Support Committee for Western Sahara.

"Norway must, as a peace nation, exhibit considerably more active support for the UN peace plan," for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, especially that Morocco "still does not accept the existing peace plan", underlined the statement of which SPS received the English translation.

"The SV supports Saharawi People’s right to self-determination", read the text. It considers that "Norway must not become a part of Morocco’s strategy for the commercialisation of the occupation" of Western Sahara, the last African non-self-governing territory and former Spanish colony.

The Scandinavian country must "therefore actively discourage trade with goods and services originating in Western Sahara, in compliance with the wishes and interests of the Saharawis", the statement further said.

The SV finally called "both parties to do their utmost to ensure that prisoners of war and “disappeared” be released and reunited with their families". The Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) had so far released about 2000 Moroccan prisoners, captured during the long war between the two parties, while Morocco still refuse to release some 150 Saharawi prisoners of war and more than 500 civil persons reported missing.

Known as the last remaining African colony, Western Sahara was occupied by Morocco in 1975, obstructing thus UN's plans to decolonise the territory. Saharawi people waged an armed struggle for the liberation of their country for 16 years under the leadership of Polisario Front.

A cease-fire was brokered by the UN in 1991 and four peace plans were so far proposed by the international organisation to settle the problem, without result because of Moroccan rejection to organise a referendum on self-determination for Saharawi people.

The Socialist Left Party (Sosialistisk Venstreparti or SV), is a Norwegian political party founded in 1975. It currently holds 23 out of 165 seats in the Norwegian Parliament. Kristin Halvorsen is its current leader, and she has been so since 1997. (SPS)
