Strasbourg, 12/02/2004
(SPS) European Parliament (EP) called Morocco to conform to UN Security Council's
resolution 1495/2003 by liberating prisoners of war and drawing the light
upon the fate of more than 500 persons reported disappeared in Western Sahara
since the beginning of Moroccan invasion to
the Saharawi territory in 1975.
In a resolution adopted on Tuesday, the EP ''asks the chairmanship, to the
Commission and to State members (to EU) to actively continue their efforts
with all concerned parties and within competent organisations of UN for the
release of the Moroccan POW's held by Polisario Front and the release
of the Saharawi POW's held by Morocco''.
It also called Morocco and Polisario Front ''to continue cooperating with
the international committee of the Red Cross to determine the fate of the
missing persons of whom we have no news since the beginning of the conflict,
in conformity with resolution 1495 (2003) of the UN Security Council and
to the repeated appeals of international community''.
It should be recalled that Polisario Front talks about more than 150 Saharawi
POWs held by Morocco, while the Association of the Saharawi Families of prisoners
and disappeared (AFAPREDESA) demands the determination of the fate of more
than 500 disappeared since the beginning of the conflict. (SPS)
