Italian points of views on Saharawi people right to self-determination,
asserts Mr. Messahel
11.11.04
Roma, 11/11/04 (SPS) The Algerian
and Italian Governments noted the convergence of the points of view on
the Saharawi people right to self-determination, affirmed Algerian
Minister Delegated in Charge for Maghreban and African Affairs,
Abdelkader Messahel, during a meeting he had last Tuesday in Roma with
Italian Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Luigi
Mantica, as well as many Italian Parliament members, indicated the
Algerian Press Agency, APS.
In the process of the discussion of many questions, within "the
framework of the regular political consultations between Italy and
Algeria", the two parties has in particular discussed over the
situation in Western Sahara, noting with satisfaction the convergence
of the points of view that characterises the visions of the two
Governments on the nature and the means to resolve the conflict that
opposes Morocco to Saharawi people.
Moreover, Mr. Messahel hailed "the resolution adopted by the Italian
Parliament that calls for the organisation of a referendum on
self-determination for the Saharawi people". He indicated, further,
that "position of Algeria is well understood and joins the attachment
of Italy to the international legality and to Security Council's
resolutions", indicated the same source.
The Algerian diplomat also underlined that "Western Sahara question is
a decolonisation problem" that should find solution within the
framework of the United Nations and "on the straight line with the
resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council", it was added.
"The United Nations, through the different resolutions and plans
adopted, especially the Baker Plan, has defined the framework for the
solution of the problem in accordance with the practices and the
Charter that governs them", underlined Mr. Messahel, stressing that the
position of Algeria joins the international community, as it was proved
through the consensus that emerged in the adoption of the resolution
1570 by the Security Council in the end of last October.
The Security Council has unanimously adopted last October the 28th, a
resolution on Western Sahara (resolution 1570/2004) in which it
recalled "all its former resolutions on Western Sahara", reaffirming
its determination to reach "a fair settlement" that "will allow
self-determination to Saharawi people". (SPS)
