SPS Aminatou Haidar starts her visit in Italy 10.06.05

Roma, 10/06/2006 (SPS) Saharawi human rights activist, Mrs. Aminatou Haidar, started on Friday a campaign of explanation and raising awareness within the Italian civil society about the situation in the Western Sahara, within the framework of a visit she is undertaking in many countries in Europe.
Florence and the Toscana region were the first stage of this visit with the organisation of a round table the Saharawi human rights activist had with the participation of the main officials of the province, especially the President Renato Romei as well as the Mayors of many cities.
''Dignity and self-determination of the Saharawi people'' is the theme of this round table, which coincides with the holding of the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the launching of a campaign of solidarity and support to the Saharawi people that was engaged in this province.
In a message addressed to the Italian public opinion, Mrs. Aminatou Haidar wished that through this testimony Italy would take into consideration the deplorable situation in which the Saharawi population is living, hoping that pressures would be exercised on the Moroccan authorities to put an end to the violations and repressions exercised by the Moroccan authorities against the Saharawi population in the occupied territories.
In this occasion, she launched an urgent call on the international community and on the UN mission to the Western Sahara (MINURSO) to urgently intervened to put an end to the violation of the Saharawi people’s rights.
The Italian capital will be the last stage of the visit of Aminatou Haidar, which will be received this Wednesday by Mr. Carlo Leoni, Vice-president of the Parliament and by the President of the Council of the Province, Adriano Labbucci. (SPS)

SPS Russia fully supports the UN efforts for the settlement of the question of the Western Sahara

Moscow, 10/06/2006 (SPS) The Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sergueï Lavrov, declared on Friday, that his country "fully supports the UN, it Secretary General, Kofi Annan, and hi Special Envoy for the Western Sahara, for the settlement of the question" of the Western Sahara, calling on the two parties to the conflict to cooperate with the UN, the Algerian Press Agency, APS, reported.
During a press conference after a meeting with the Moroccan Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Benaïssa, who is undertaking a visit to Moscow, Mr. Lavrov underlined the need for a settlement to the question of the Western Sahara within the framework of the international law and UN.
The Russian Foreign Minister studied with his Moroccan counterpart the questions related to the strengthening of the bilateral cooperation and conflicts in Africa, especially the conflict of the Western Sahara, the situation in the Middle East and the Iranian dossier. (SPS)
