Parliamentarians from different Swedish groups called on their Government to recognise the Saharawi Republic

Stockholm, 07/04/2006 (SPS) Parliamentarians from the different Swedish political parties called on their Government to recognise the Saharawi Republic, estimating that "strengthening the position of the Saharawi Republic will contribute to the increase of security, knowing that this Republic is the only guarantee against the use of terrorism in the region", reported the Swedish newspaper SVD, in its Thursday’s edition.

In an appeal publicised in SVD’s Thursday’s edition, the Parliamentarians underlined that the policy of Morocco in the region "created instability in the North Western Africa" and consequently, "liberty, development and security in the region demand a break with the current policy" of the European Union.

To the signatories of the appeal, "it is necessary to adopt new initiatives that would engage Morocco and France", estimating that a "clear signal" like "the recognition of the Saharawi Republic" to give an example to others nations is  the strategy to adopt.

"To continue in the passivity regarding the question of the Western Sahara will only favours the interests of Morocco and France in the North-West of Africa and will undermine the confidence in the European Union as a reliable actor", the Parliamentarians warned.

"Thus, Sweden must promote the international law and join the list of the 82 countries that are recognising the Saharawi Republic. A Swedish recognition will be an continuity in the Swedish traditions of anti-colonialism and a support of the liberation of the colonised peoples. We will gain the respect and sympathy of Africa. The international law will thus be respected and Sweden too".

The appeal that intervenes after the visit of the Moroccan Prime Minister, Driss Jettou, to Sweden, was signed by Parliamentarians of the Socialist Democrat Party, Party of the Centre, Christian Democrat Party, Liberal Party, and Party of Environment, it was indicated. (SPS)
