The meeting, that took place with the presence of the Political Director of the Ministry, Ambassador Sturia Sigurjonsson et Mr. Nikulas Hanningan, Head of the Division  of International Institutions of the Political Department, focused on "the last developments of the Saharawi question, as well as the contribution Icelandic Government could provide for the establishment of peace in the region, by supporting the international legality in Western Sahara", added the Saharawi Representative to SPS.

Mr. Yahyaoui had been, before, invited by the Committee for Foreign Affairs at the Parliament, where he was received by its President, Mrs. Solveig Petursdottir, with the presence of representatives of political parties in Parliament.

The Saharawi diplomat exposed to his audience the situation of the peace process in Western Sahara, emphasizing the obstacles erected by Morocco in front of the UN's attempts to resolve the conflict peacefully.

"Polisario Front gave tremendous concessions to help the international community resolve the conflict peacefully, but Moroccan intransigence and the lack of firmness from the UN lead all solutions to failure, what imposes more pressures on Morocco from the countries of the world, Iceland included, "to impose the respect of the international legality and put an end to the indecision of the UN", he put.

On their part, the Icelandic Parliament members expressed "their unconditioned support to the UN's efforts and to the Saharawi people right to self-determination", indicated Mr. Yahyaoui, who recently was in a round to the Scandinavian countries, mainly Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Norway. (SPS)
