Danish government renews its support to Baker's plan for self-determination of Saharawi people

06.03.04

Copenhagen, 06/03/2004 (SPS) The Danish Government renewed its support to Baker's plan for self-determination of Saharawi people, considering that it is the adequate solution to the conflict opposing Polisario Front to Morocco since the latter's invasion of the Saharawi territory in 1975, indicated a source close to Polisario Front's representative to Denmark.

The Danish Government continues its support to the UN efforts to find a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara

In his answer to a member of the Danish parliament, the Danish Foreign Affairs Minister, Per Stig Møller, stated that his country ''continues its support to the efforts deployed by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, Mr. James Baker, with a view to finding a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara'', stressed the same source.

Western Sahara, former Spanish colony, was invaded in November 1975 by Moroccan armed forces who occupied the main cities.

Morocco, still rejecting the organisation of a UN's supervised referendum, had erected, around the main cities, a defensive wall of more than 2000 Km, filled with millions mines, thousands armoured tanks and heavy artillery, and protected by more than 120.000 soldiers (SPS)
