OCCUPIED TERRITORIES/HERITAGE

Saharawi NGOs call to an urgent action to protect a Saharawi historical heritage

Chahid El Hafed, 05/07/2004 (SPS) The Association of Saharawi Prisoners and disappeareds’ families (AFAPREDESA) and the union of Saharawi Jurists (UJS) launched an appeal to the international community to stop Morocco from destroying a Saharawi historical heritage, the 'Villa Cisneros' Factory', reported a communiqué the two associations publicised Saturday, of which SPS received a copy.

"Moroccan occupying authorities started, in the 2nd of July 2004, the destruction of the Factory of Villa Cisneros (Dajla), a Saharawi heritage built in 1884, during the arrival of Spanish colonisers to Saharawi coasts", warned the communiqué. Morocco, by this new act, "continues in its deliberate attempts to annihilate a part of Saharawi national historical heritage".

This "barbarous" conduct is contrary to the principles of the UNESCO, which condemns the "intentional destruction of cultural heritage", and should thus be condemn and forbid, since this historical building is a part of "humanity common possession", underlined the text.

The two organisations launched an urgent appeal to the international community and its concerned bodies, in particular ONESCO and UN, to act in front of "this diabolical plan committed by Moroccan Kingdom, aiming at annihilating Saharawi people, its culture and its heritage".

"The Factory of Villa Cesneros’, 'Medina Gatell' (Cap Blanc) and 'Puerto Badia' are three factories built by Emilio Bonelli, prestigious Spanish military and arabist, sent by Canovas Government after Berlin's accords", to establish primary infrastructure of Spanish colonialism in Western Sahara, recalled the communiqué.
