Moroccan authorities launch a new campaign of defamation against Ali Salem Tamek

05.05.05

El Aaiun (occupied Capital), 05/05/2005 (SPS Moroccan authorities launched a new campaign of defamation against Saharawi human rights activist and ex-political prisoner, Ali Salem Tamek, on Tuesday. They used a pretended press release some members of his family signed.

Moroccan press agency, MAP, the main mean of the Moroccan colonial propaganda, did manage no qualifiers of segregation against the activist. Thus he is "a traitor", "a renegade", to pretend then that his family rejected him and "from the family, tribal and national unity."

For the MAP, the Saharawi activist «betrayed the principles and noble ideals of the Tamek family". These principles are, according to the propaganda of the Moroccan authority, the submission to the Moroccan colonial presence, which is rejected by Ali Salem Tamek, his family and Saharawi people since 1975.

The mean of Moroccan colonial propaganda aims apparently to prepare a new attack against Saharawi human rights activists "to intimidate Saharawi population who keep demonstrating against the Moroccan occupation existence in their territory", declared to SPS a Saharawi activist living in occupied El Aaiun.

"Mr. Ali Salem Tamek, Mrs. Aminatu Haidar, the symbol of resistance and RAFTO human rights award winner, Sidi Mohamed Daddach, besides Mr. Brahim Dahan, Mohamed El Moutawakil, Hmad Hammad, Mrs. Djimi El Ghali, and tens of emblematic figures of the new era of Saharawi resistance in occupied territories are daily subjected to intimidations, harassments, and more seriously to direct threats against their own," he said.

"The Moroccan occupation ignores maybe that it can certainly assassinate us as it threaten to do, but it will never succeed to assassinate the will of the Saharawi people to struggle for their independence, existence, legitimate rights and goods and natural resources daily plundered by Rabat. Morocco and its tutors have got to exterminate the Saharawi people once and for all if they want to get the full control over Western Sahara", he underlined.

The Saharawi activist, Ali Salem Tamek, was subjected to many campaigns of defamation led by the Moroccan colonial occupation and widely spread by its means of communication. (SPS)

 "
Urgent appeal

Human Rights Activists in the Western Sahara
El Aaiun, May 04th, 2005

"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression, this right includes freedom to hold opinion without interference and to seek, receive and impact information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." (Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights).

This article and others from the Universal conventions that call for the respect of the freedom of opinion and expression and individuals’ personal security, are subject to an atrocious violation by the Moroccan state in the Western Sahara. The fierce campaign is waged against the Saharawi militant and human rights activist, ALI SALEM TAMEK, through many Moroccan papers and false associations, and recently by the Arab Maghreb News Agency on May 3rd, 2005.

These means are now targeting his right to free opinion and expression and threatening his personal security, and trying to isolate him in his own family for the only reason that he believes in the Saharawi people’s right in self-determination and independence.

ALI SALEM TAMEK, a trade unionist and  human rights activist, was already deported to the north of Morocco, sacked of work and arrested three times:1993- 1997- 2002; and was denied the right to get his passport for more than 10 years.

Therefore, we urge you to move as soon as possible and take the necessary decisions to protect ALI SALEM TAMEK’s life, and charge the Moroccan state with the consequences of this inhuman and dangerous violation." (SPS)
