UGTSARIO denounces the marginalisation of Saharawi trade unionists in Western Sahara

Chahid El Hafed, 05/05/2004 (SPS) The General Union of the Workers of Saguiet El Hamra and Rio de Oro (UGTSARIO) denounced on Tuesday «the marginalisation, disbanding, lack of freedom of expression, oppression and detention of syndical activists » in occupied territories of Western Sahara, reported the organisation in a communiqué received by SPS.

«Indignant» with «Moroccan syndicate indifference» towards this situation, UGTSARIO deplored this unanimous position of Moroccan Syndicates. «Instead of searching for a solution to the numerous problems Moroccan workers suffer from such as unemployment, injustice and analphabetism, Moroccan syndicates ignored this tragedy and chose to adopt Moroccan regime's expansionist claims».

«This declared position does certainly not serve in improving the dramatic conditions of working class, it only deepen the sufferings of the worker who pays 2.5% of his modest salary for the adventures of the regime in the region », added the communiqué.

The Saharawi syndical organisation launched an appeal to all syndicates around the world to «denounce the sufferings of the workers in Western Sahara as well as in Morocco and to contribute through effective supporting efforts to improve their life conditions ». (SPS)
