05.02.04

Algiers, 05/02/2004 (SPS) The Algerian President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, declared that Western Sahara's question is an unachieved decolonisation problem, considering the Baker's plan as a new opportunity for peace.

Speaking on Tuesday during a dinner offered in the honour of the Chinese President, who is in a state visit to Algeria, Mr. Bouteflika stressed that Western Sahara's question "remains what it had always been, an unachieved decolonisation problem, and still is waiting for the implementation of a settlement which is conforming with international legality".

In this respect, he added, the resolution of the 31st July 2003 in which UN's Security Council approved the Baker's plan for the settlement of this question, unquestionably, is a new opportunity to a lasting peace in the whole region".

"Algeria will continue providing its full support to the efforts of UN's Secretary General and his Personal Envoy, for the enforcement of a fair and final settlement, based on the practice of Saharawi People of their right to self-determination through a free and impartial referendum supervised by UN", he concluded.
