wall of shame
04.04.05
Brussels,
04/04/2005 (SPS) European Senator, President of the European
Coordination of Committees of Solidarity with the Western Sahara
(EUCOCO), Pierre Galand, denounced the Moroccan defensive wall, which
constitutes "an obvious violation to the international law, to
humanitarian laws and to human rights". He called to "urgently
denounced the silence surrounding this wall and the millions miles"
that separates and denaturises the territory of Western Sahara.
Mr. Galland estimated, in a letter he addressed to UN's Secretary
General, Kofi Annan, SPS received, that by including a complicated
system of antipersonnel mines the wall of shame constitutes "an oeuvre
that contradicts the international norms". He recalled that Rabat has
rejected to sign the Protocol of Ottawa already ratified by 144
countries.
To the European Senator this military building is "a characterised
violation to the rights of the human being", (…) "an element of
destruction of the cultural heritage of the region and a damage to the
environment.
On another hand he considered that "there is an urgent need to put an
end to the plundering of the natural resources of Western Sahara, which
occurs thanks to the protection of the wall". He underlined that "75%
of the annual fishing of the European countries in the African shores
comes from the Western Sahara". (SPS)
