"TE Moroccan colonial court of appeal of El Aaiun decided this new postponement, t pretended, to give the defence enough time to study the dossiers, while the real reason behind this delay is no more than the prolongation of the sufferings of the families of the Saharawi political prisoners an of the prisoners themselves, who should not, at the first place, be judged for the political opinions and for their peaceful activism to defend a right that is internationally recognised to them in all UN’s resolutions, mainly the right to self-determination and independence", stated a source close to the families of the political prisoners who required anonymity.
Moroccan colonial court of El Aaiun condemned 14 Saharawi political detainees, Wednesday 14 December 2005, to sentences going between 6 months to 3 years imprisonment after having postponed the trials twice since last November the 22nd, it should be recalled.

Among the 14 Saharawi prisoners 7 Saharawi human rights activists are considered by Moroccan colonial authorities as the agitators of the demonstrations in favour of the independence of Western Sahara that are taking place in Western Sahara since last May the 21st 2005.
In a letter it sent last December 2005 to the king Mohamed VI, the international human rights organisation underlined that the "proceedings so far have shown that the defendants' rights to a fair trial were at risk", knowing that under Morocco's constitution, the king serves as the president of the country's judiciary, Human Rights Watch emphasised, it should be further recalled. SPS A European Parliament’s member wonders about the ways to put an end to the Moroccan oppression in Western Sahara
|
|
Madrid, 04/01/2006 (SPS) The Member of tاe European Parliament(MEP), Willy Meyer, of the Spanish Left Party (Izquierda Unida-IU), wondered about the position the European Union’s Council is expecting to adopt in the face of the "recent acts of oppression" exercised by the Moroccan authorities on the Saharawi population, especially the assassination of the young Saharawi, Lembarki Hamdi, reported Spanish Press Agency, Europa Press.
In this respect, Mr. Meyer recalled the young Saharawi, Lembarki Hamdi, was killed under torture he was subjected to by the Moroccan Groups of Urban Security (GUS), last October the 29th 2005, after he has participated to peaceful demonstrations in the occupied El Aaiun.
According to the MEP, this act is "a political crime" and a "premeditated assassination", which put the family of the victim and the whole Saharawi people in a "deep mourning".
These condemnable acts, he said, are added to "an undetermined number of aggressions, tortures, iniquitous judgements and permanent persecutions against Saharawi human rights activists", which the Moroccan Government continues to practice against the Saharawi population in the occupied territories and south Morocco, the same source added.
The deputy of the IU recalled that Morocco promised to promote human rights, according to its engagements in the accords of association Rabat signed with the European Union and within the policy of neighbourhood.
Mr. Myer estimated that in the face of the persistence of Morocco in the violation and the non-application of the mentioned accords, "the EU must condemn, with no ambiguity, the aggressive and oppressive policies adopted by the Moroccan Government against the Saharawi people in the occupied territories of Western Sahara".
He also called on the EU to "actively intervene" to "demand" the putting to an end of this policy as well as to the permanent human rights violations in Western Sahara. (SPS)
