Santander (Spain), 03/02/2005 (SPS) The Minister, Counsellor to the Presidency, Mohamed Sidati, criticised the "strange" position of the Government of Spain in the conflict of Western Sahara. Spain did not assume its responsibility in the decolonisation of the territory and favoured Morocco in its intransigence and rejection to subscribe to the international legality by implementing the Baker Plan, reported Spanish newspaper, "El Diario Montanés" in its Wednesday edition.

Animating a conference on Saharawi people entitled "Other peoples other cultures: Sahara the feelings of a people", Mr. Sidati estimated that the current impasse, which is a result to Moroccan rejection of Saharawi people self-determination. A position that may cause "a disastrous situation".

To Mr. Sidati, what is more alarming is "the negative impact" of Spanish abstention in the last UN's vote. A position that "influenced in a negative way other countries of the European Union", recalling that the only solution remains in the respect of the resolutions of the UN and its Security Council; which calls for the enforcement of the Baker Plan.

On another hand, the Saharawi Minister met with the vice-president, Counsellor of Institutional and European Affairs of the autonomous Government of Cantabria, Dolores Gorostiaga.

A UK organisation expresses its "ill-feeling" towards Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara

London, 03/02/2005 (SPS) Western Sahara Campaign UK (WSC) expressed its ill-feeling "toward Morocco’s continued occupation of Western Sahara" and "its repeated diplomatic stalling to prevent the implementation of the Baker Plan".

During a recent official meeting in London with a Moroccan parliamentary delegation (MPD), M. Tom Marchbanks, Member to the Western Sahara Campaign, indicated in a press release that his organisation has expressed its sentiments to the MPD.

WSC explained "the strength of negative feeling in the UK toward Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara when the occupation has been deemed illegal under the international court of justice", added Mr. Marchbanks. An opinion stressed by Moroccan intransigence "and its repeated diplomatic stalling to prevent the implementation of the Baker Plan", he said.

The members of the organisation also explained their Moroccan interlocutors that there is "a sizable UK solidarity movement supporting the Saharawi and the UN referendum for self determination".

They also expressed MPD their deception towards "Moroccan suppression of human rights in the occupied territories (particularly free speech)", adding that "until the Saharawi issue is resolved through the Baker Plan, it will continue to negatively impact on Morocco’s broader relations with the UK and the rest of the world".
