SPAIN/SADR/SOLIDARITY
Palma de Mallorca undertake an action of solidarity with the Saharawi
people
Madrid, 02/09/2004 (SPS) A demonstration of solidarity with the
Saharawi people and of support to its right to self-determination is
planed for this Friday in La Palma de Mallorca, Capital of the Spanish
autonomous community of Balearic Islands.
The goal from this demonstration, which is organised by the Association
of the Friends of the Saharawi people in this community, is to claim
from the Spanish Government a "greater implication in the establishment
of propositions that can allow Saharawi people to exercise its right to
self-determination through a referendum organised under the auspices of
the United Nations".
The President of the association, Xavier Fortury, stated that the
objective of the demonstration is to mobilise his citizens about the
Western Sahara conflict and about the violations of human right to
which this people is subjected, quoted the Spanish press agency Europa
Press.
The second objective, he added, is to exhort the Government to actively
take part to the settlement of this conflict by impulsing the process
that will lead to the organisation of the referendum.
Mr. Fortuny affirmed that Spain must honour its "political and moral
debt" towards Saharawi people, whom Spain "abandoned" by signing the
tripartite accords of Madrid in 1975. (SPS)
