Frente POLISARIO Representation at the United Nations

Press Release

[New York, 22 April 2022]: On 20 April, the Security Council held closed consultations on the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). The Council was briefed by Mr Staffan de Mistura, Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, and Mr Alexander Ivanko, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of MINURSO.

The Consultations were held in line with resolution 2602 (2021; OP 10), adopted by the Security Council on 29 October 2021, in which the Council requested the Secretary-General to brief the Council on a regular basis, and at any time he deems appropriate during the mandate period, to include within six months of this mandate’s renewal.

The strong positions expressed during the Security Council consultations regarding the need to achieve a peaceful, just, and lasting solution that provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara on the basis of relevant UN resolutions is a clear response to those who seek to maintain the status quo and to promote dubious solutions based on expansionism and violation of basic norms of international law.

The concerns voiced by some Member States regarding the deteriorating situation of human rights in the Occupied Western Sahara bear greater testimony to the urgent need for the establishment of an independent and permanent UN mechanism for the protection of human rights in the Territory.

The Frente POLISARIO reaffirms that it will never accept the fait accompli that the occupying state of Morocco is seeking to impose by force in the Occupied Territories of the Sahrawi Republic (SADR), and that it will continue to use all legitimate means to defend the sacred rights of the Sahrawi people and their national aspirations for freedom and independence.

The Frente POLISARIO reaffirms once again that the only viable and practicable way forward to achieve a peaceful, just, and enduring solution to the decolonisation of Western Sahara is to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise freely and democratically their inalienable and non-negotiable right to self-determination and independence in accordance with the precepts of international legality and relevant resolutions of the United Nations and the African Union.

The time has come for the United Nations and the international community to match their stated commitment to international law and UN resolutions with concrete actions to bring about the decolonisation of Western Sahara, the last colony in Africa.
