Addis Ababa, 5 April 2021 (SPS) - The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Peace and Security, Adeoye Bankole, called on the African organization to "play a stronger and more active role" to bring lasting peace in Africa.
In a tweet at the end of his meeting with the representative of the Sahrawi Republic to the AU, Lamine Baali, at the headquarters of the continental organization in Addis Ababa, Adeoye Bankole clarified that they had agreed to "the need for a peaceful settlement to conflicts and regional security to silence the guns."
The African PSC recently demanded that Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) engage in direct talks without preconditions, in accordance with Article 4 of the AU Constitutive Act and the relevant provisions of the CPS Protocol.
The PSC underlined the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and to initiate dialogue, by creating an environment conducive to the conduct of negotiations between the Sahrawi Republic and Morocco, in its final declaration concerning the meeting on Western Sahara held on March 9, as part of the follow-up to the implementation of point number 15 of the decision of the 14th extraordinary session of the AU under the theme "Silencing the guns".
