Algiers, Jan 27, 2021 (SPS) - The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Peace and Security, Mr. Ismail Chargui, declared on Tuesday that “the conflict between the Sahrawi Republic and Morocco threatens regional stability, calling for the acceleration of the process for the organization of a referendum of self-determination for the Saharawi people ”.
In statements to Sputnik, Mr. Chargui said “the escalation between the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco may threaten regional stability and that we are seeking a quick solution that will help to put an end to the confrontations and to embady the peace plan into practice by organizing a self-determination referendum”.
In this sense, the president of the AU Peace and Security Council recalled that “the president of the AU, Cyril Ramaphosa, had called on UN to appoint an envoy as soon as possible, since he has been vacant since the Horst Kohler resigns in May 2019, to help resolve the conflict ”. SPS
