Submitted on

Oslo, 22 November 2020 (SPS) - Chairperson of the Norwegian Workers’ Youth League, Astrid Willa Eide Hoem, invited following her election the new leadership of the organization to intensify efforts and action to contribute to ending Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara, calling for freedom and independence of the Saharawi people.
Taking note of the recent violation of ceasefire by Morocco, she stressed the need for civil society to assume responsibility in convincing that war is not the only solution, adding that it is also possible via politics to achieve peace and democracy for the Saharawi people.
For its part, the Norwegian Trade Union Confederation expressed concern over the recent escalation in Western Sahara, urging Norway’s government to use pressure on Morocco to go back to negotiations in order to reach a lasting political solution ensuring the right to self-determination for the Saharawi people.
The Confederation recalled that they issued in 2017 a motion calling for the need to allow the Saharawi people to choose their future through a free and fair referendum on self-determination. (SPS)
