Frente POLISARIO statement on the resignation of Personal Envoy Horst Kӧhler

Submitted on

New York, May 23, 2019 (SPS) - The Frente POLISARIO is deeply saddened to learn of the resignation of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, former German President Horst Kӧhler. During his tenure as Personal Envoy, President Kӧhler was unwavering in his pursuit of a just and lasting solution that would provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara. We thank President Kӧhler for his dynamic efforts to relaunch the UN peace process in Western Sahara, and we wish him good health and every success in all his endeavours.
The Frente POLISARIO remains fully committed to the UN-led political process and to the realisation of our people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence.  It is imperative that the Personal Envoy’s departure not be used as an excuse to delay or derail the progress made since the first UN-led roundtable meeting on Western Sahara held in December 2018.  We therefore urge the UN Secretary-General to move swiftly to appoint a new Personal Envoy, who shares President Koehler’s strong conviction, stature and resolve.  We continue to believe that with the political will and determination of the UN Security Council a just and lasting solution that provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara is within reach.
