Submitted on

New York, October 18, 2018 (SPS) - The European Union reaffirmed the support of the union for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara after the approval by the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) of the 73rd sessions of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) of a new resolution on Western Sahara.
Austria, on behalf of the European Union and the countries of the Stabilization and Association Process and potential candidates, has stated that the EU welcomes the commitment of the UN Secretary General to relaunch the negotiation process with a new dynamic and a spirit that will lead to the resumption of a political process with the aim of achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that will provide the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of agreements consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations. "We continue to encourage the parties to work for that solution, within the framework of the United Nations."
The EU is also concerned about the lack of funding and encourages the international community to provide new additional financial contributions for the Sahrawi refugees. SPS
