Algiers, April 28, 2018 (SPS) - Algeria “notes with satisfaction” the new resolution on the issue of Western Sahara that the United Nations Security Council adopted Friday and underlines that this resolution reaffirms that there is no other solution to the conflict but that which enables the Saharawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination, said the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abdelaziz Benali Cherif in a statement following the adoption of the UN resolution.
The resolution adopted by the Security Council extends by six months, until 31 October 2018, the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Holding of a Referendum in Western Sahara.
“Algeria notes with satisfaction the new resolution on the issue of Western Sahara that the UN Security Council has adopted, underling that his resolution reaffirms clearly, once again, in its preamble as in its purview that there is no other solution to this conflict but this one which ensures the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination,” said Benali Cherif.
Algeria “can only welcome the Security Council’s total support to the Secretary General and his Special Envoy to relaunch, with new impetus and spirit, negotiations to reach a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable solution which provides the people of Western Sahrawi with the right to self-determination,” he added.
“As it can only join the call of the Security Council to the two parties to the conflict, the Moroccan Kingdom and the Polisario Front, to resume negotiations, without preconditions and in good faith, to reach a fair, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution which guarantees the right of the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination,” said Benali Cherif, adding that Algeria “hopes, in this regard, that the extension of MINURSO mandate, for a period of six months, prompts the two parties to the conflict to take part, as soon as possible, in the fifth round of negotiations that the Secretary General’s Special Envoy has committed and is actively working to organize.” (SPS)
