Settlement of Western Sahara conflict: Russia supports UN mediatory efforts

Moscow, April 13, 2018 (SPS) - Russia expressed support for the mediatory efforts of the UN aiming the settlement of Western Sahara dispute, underlining   that “there are no alternatives to a political settlement of the Western Sahara problem in line with corresponding UN Security Council resolutions.”
A release of the Russian foreign ministry issued on Wednesday following the meeting between Russian FM Serguei Lavrov and Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Western Sahara Horst Koehler said that Russia "expressed support for the mediatory efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy, as well as for the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and its key role in maintaining regional stability."
Koehler's working visit to Moscow coincided with that of a Sahrawi delegation led by Coordinator of the Polisario Front with MINURSO, Mhamed Kheddad,
Kheddad expressed the Front readiness to begin "negotiations for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people in accordance with international law." (SPS)
