UN chief concerned over rising tensions in al Guerguerat

New York, Jan 7, 2018 (SPS) - United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed concerns over the recent tension in the buffer strip of Al Guerguerat, calling on Morocco and Polisario Front for restraint.

"The Secretary General is deeply concerned over rising tensions near al Guerguerat, in the buffer strip in southern Western Sahara, between the Moroccan sand wall and the Mauritanian border," said UN deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq.

The UN chief underlined that the withdrawal of Polisario Front and Morocco units from this area in 2017 "was critical to creating an environment conductive to the resumption of dialogue under the auspices of his Personal Envoy Horst Kohler," Haq added.

Guterres has called on the two parties to "exercise maximum restraint" and to avoid escalating tensions as well as any action, which may constitute a change to the status quo of the buffer strip. (SPS)
