Situation of Gdeim Izik prisoners: EU MPs express “deep concern”

Brussels, Dec 11, 2017 (SPS) -European MPs on Monday expressed their “deep concern” over the “critical” situation of the Sahrawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik group, and urged the European Union (EU) to take the necessary measures to provide them with medical assistance in accordance with the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.
In a letter addressed to High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, 26 MEPs representing all political parties expressed their "deep concern" over the situation of the Sahrawi prisoners of Gdeim Izik group, particularly Sidi Abdallahi Abbahah and Ahmed Sbaai, placed in isolation since 4 December.
MEPs are worried about the deterioration of the health of these two Saharawi prisoners, including Ahmed Sbaai, who suffers from chronic heart disease and remains deprived of medical assistance.
"Given the health state of Sidi Abdallahi Abbahah and Ahmed Sbaai, we urge you, as well as the European Union, to intervene so that they receive appropriate medical care as established in international law humanitarian aid can be provided to them", wrote the EU MPs. (SPS)
