Protest in Madrid for release of Gdeim Izik prisoners

Submitted on

Madrid, 17 January 2017 (SPS)  - The Spanish Coordination of Associations Supporting Sahrawi People (CEAS-Sahara), will stage a protest in Madrid, Spain, on 23 January to urge Moroccan authorities to release the Sahrawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik group.
In its statement, a copy of which reached APS, the Spanish Coordination called on all social and human rights organizations as well as trade unions and all supporters of the Sahrawi cause to participate in the protest that will be staged outside the Embassy of Morocco in Madrid to demand the release of Sahrawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik group.
The protest aims at exerting pressure on Morocco for the release of Gdeim Izik political prisoners, unfairly sentenced by a Moroccan military court, said the CEAS coordinator, Jose Taboada.
He added that "other protests will be held throughout Spain."
The Spanish Coordination recalled that after decades of Moroccan occupation, "the rights of Sahrawi people are still violated, and this trial is the proof."
"Morocco continues its repressive policy by using its courts as instruments in the systematic violations of Sahrawi people's rights," said the CEAS.
The Coordination also urged the United Nations to "protect human rights in the occupied Sahrawi territories."
The international community must ensure the implementation of the resolutions related to the holding of a referendum on the self-determination of Western Sahara to allow its people "decide freely their future," added the statement.SPS
