Sahrawi authorities meet with leadership of MINURSO on situation in Elguergarat

Shaheed Elhafed,  September 5, 2016 (SPS) - Minister of National Defence, Abdelahi Lehbib, Secretary of State for Documentation and Security, Brahim Mohamed Mahmoud, and Coordinator with MINURSO, M'hamed Khadad, met Monday with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, head of MINURSO, Ms. Kim Bolduc, and  Force Commander Major General Mohamed Tayeb Azam.

In a statement to the media, Secretary of State for Documentation and Security, Brahim Mohamed Mahmoud, confirmed "the meeting was an opportunity for Sahrawi leadership to express its position on the situation, which is fully consistent with the statement of the UN Secretary-General, calling for return to the status quo ante, ie suspension of the works and withdrawal of the Moroccan Royal forces beyond the wall. “

Brahim Mohamed Mahmoud reasserted “the solution lies in the suspension of the works and withdrawal of Moroccan Royal forces beyond the wall, otherwise the sliding of the situation in the region will inevitably lead to serious complications," adding that Sahrawi party would bear full responsibility for all costs to deter violations of international legitimacy.

Regarding the ceasefire, Brahim Mohamed Mahmoud recalled “the importance of MINURSO lies in the full and comprehensive implementation of the settlement plan, starting with the creation of favorable conditions to organize a referendum to enable the Saharawi people to self-determination.”

Saharawi authorities had protested, in mid August, against Moroccan flagrant breach of the ceasefire agreement between the two parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front and Morocco. President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, charged the secretary of state for documentation and security to summon the head of the MINURSO office in Tindouf  to inform him of the strong protest of the leadership of the Polisario Front. Morover, the MINURSO leadership, civilian and military, were  summoned by Minister of Defence Abdelahi Lehbib to inform them again of the protest of the Polisario Front.

The minister of defence informed MINURSO chief of staff and acting commander that, as of the morning of August 28th, he deployed military forces in the area of Alguergarat, south-western Western Sahara, to prevent further Moroccan activities beyond the Berm, it should be recalled. (SPS)
