Morocco’s irresponsible positions put the region in a situation with unknown consequences, says Addouh

Algiers, April 25, 2016 (SPS) - the irresponsible positions recently adopted by Morocco “put the region in a situation with unknown consequences,” underlined Monday, in Algiers, the Speaker of the Sahrawi National Council, Khatri Addouh.
Speaking at the end of his discussions with the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (Lower House) Mohamed Larbi Ould Khelifa, Addouh said that “Morocco puts the region in a situation with unknown consequences, by reducing the elements of the MINURSO mission based on a unilateral decision,” calling on the Security Council to react and adopt “a firm position” regarding these “irresponsible and negative” actions.
Addouh said that he broached, with Ould Khelifa, the latest developments of the Sahrawi issue, particularly the report recently presented by the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon to the Security Council at the end of his latest visit to the region.
In the light of this report, the Security Council is preparing to discuss the Sahrawi issue and the “dangerous” positions recently adopted by Morocco.
In this regard, he recalled Morocco’s determination against the UN Secretary General and its attempts to hinder the efforts of its special envoy to Western Sahara, Christopher Ross.
For its positions, Morocco “not only tries to block the settlement process but also to foil it.”
The Sahrawi official said he is convinced that the Security Council will respond “firmly” to the “excesses” by re-establishing the MINURSO in its mandate and its prerogatives and by stopping a specific and detailed calendar for a settlement on the basis of a self-determination referendum.
Addouh once again hailed Algeria for its “constant” support to the Sahrawi cause and to the Sahrawi people for its right to self-determination.
The Speaker of the Sahrawi National Council arrived Sunday, to Algiers, for a three-day visit at the invitation of the Speaker of the Council of the Nation (Upper House), Abdelkader Bensalah.SPS
