Djanet (Algeria), April 16, 2016 (SPS) - A regional conference on “developments of the Sahrawi cause” will be held Sunday in Djanet (Ilizi), Algeria, by the National Algerian Committee of solidarity with Western Sahara” to “assess the latest developments of this issue and security challenges resulting from these developments,” according to organizers.
The conference will deal with the latest development of the Sahrawi cause and current challenges in the region, in the presence of experts, academicians and experts in international relations and the international humanitarian law.
Besides, the conferences represents an opportunity to examine Morocco’s “irresponsible decision” to reduce the staff of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), a measure likely to exacerbate tensions in the region, as it constitutes a blatant infringement of the ceasefire agreement inked by both parties (the Polisario Front and Morocco) under the aegis of the United Nations in 1991.
This event also aims at strengthening the national internal front to enable it meet security challenges and “support the Sahrawi people in its struggle for freedom and independence.”
Several regional and international bodies, including the UN Council for Peace and Security (CPS) and the African Union, stated that Morocco’s decision to expel MINURSO staff from the Sahrawi occupied territories “threatens regional security”, calling on the CPS “to fully assume its responsibilities in this field.” (SPS)
