Bir Lahlu, March 22, 2016 (SPS) - The Polisario Front launched an urgent appeal to the Security Council to assume its responsibilities as the first head of MINURSO and guarantor of the mission with which it was invested, namely organization of self-determination referendum in Western Sahara, said a letter from the President of the Sahrawi Republic SG of the Polisario Front, Mohamed Abdelaziz to the President of the security Council, Ismael A. Gaspar Martins.

“We are following with great concern the recent dangerous developments in Western Sahara in which the Kingdom of Morocco has put the United Nations and its Security Council in a fait accompli that reflect a deliberate attempt to undermine all the efforts made by the international community for more than 40 years, in order to complete the decolonization of the last African territory on the list of non-self-governing territories.” Said the Sahrawi Republic

“Despite these serious developments, the Polisario Front reiterates its full confidence in the efforts of the United Nations under Security Council and the General Assembly to reach a peaceful solution that ensures the inalienable right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly and the decisions of the African Union Organization.” SG of the Polisario Front went on saying
“Polisario Front confirms its full commitment to the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the organization of a referendum of self-determination in Western Sahara, has shown through all stages of the process, a positive and cooperative position with all the UN bodies and MINURSO, not hesitating for years in drawing the attention of the Security Council and the General Secretariat of the dangers caused by Moroccan obstruction to the peace process.” Mohamed Abdelaziz added
“Polisario Front strongly condemns the irresponsible decision of Morocco to expel staff of the United Nations Mission for the organization of a self-determination referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) assuming it the full responsibility of the consequences that will follow.” he wrote

“Morocco's recent decision to expel the staff forming the civilian, political and administrative component of MINURSO, means the end of the mission for which it was created. The implementation of this dangerous decision constitutes a violation by Morocco to the resolutions of the Security Council of the General Assembly and a transgression of the principles and objectives enacted in the United Nations Charter.” Polisario Front SG expressed
The Polisario Front reaffirms its commitment to the settlement plan signed by both parties, the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco under the auspices of the United Nations and the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1991 which resulted in the deployment of MINURSO. Mohamed Abdelaziz stated
“In the face of these serious developments, the Polisario Front calls urgently Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities as the first responsible for MINURSO and the guarantor of the task for which it was created, namely to organize a referendum of self-determination in Western Sahara.” Sahrawi President said in his letter to the president of UN SC.SPS
