Sahrawis awaiting fulfilment of Ban Ki-moon's pledges

LONDON (UK), March 09, 2016 (SPS) - Polisario Front representative in London Mohamed Limam Mohamed Ali said Tuesday  that the Sahrawi people are awaiting the fulfilment of the promises UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made during his visit to the Sahrawi liberated territories and the Sahrawi refugee camps.
"There is reason for optimism," said the Sahrawi official, whose belief is reinforced by the "doubtful" silence of the Moroccan authorities since the beginning of the UN Secretary General visit successively to Spain, Mauritania, Sahrawi refugee camps in the liberated territories of Western Sahara and Algeria.
Ban Ki-moon was sensitive to the sufferings of the Sahrawi people, said Limam who wished that these feelings are reflected in the report that the UN Chief will submit to the Security Council next April.
He has also hoped that the UN Security Council "takes into account Ban Ki-moon report while drafting the resolution to be adopted in April, "to open new prospects to the Sahrawis who privilege rapid solution to this conflict."
During his visit, the UN chief urged the international community to "increase aid to the Sahrawi  refugees," stressing that the International Donor Conference planned for May 1stin Geneva, "will be an opportunity to demand more aid for the Sahrawi people."
Ban Ki-moon said that his visit is part of an effort to revive negotiations for the settlement of Western Sahara conflict, guaranteeing the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, noting that "the Sahrawis have the right to dignity and the protection of their fundamental rights, including the right to self-determination.”
The Polisario Front representative in London dubbed "historic" the visit, the first of its kind, of the UN Secretary General to the liberated territories even though it did not include the part of occupied Western Sahara because of Morocco’s stubbornness and the absence of any political will to achieve a just and democratic solution guaranteeing the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence.SPS
